SINGLE STORY by Ingrid Restemayer

1/15/23-3/15/23

Ingrid Restemayer is a fiber artist and print maker based in Minneapolis, MN. Her mixed media artwork incorporates traditional hand-embroidery techniques on paper, collaged with hand-pulled dry point prints.

Her work has always had a hint of storytelling with the inclusion of my intaglio images as pseudo-illustrations when paired with hand-embroidery.  But the work in Single Story takes the imagery more into the realm of the vernacular. In this body of work she continues to combine printmaking, collage and stitching. This particular work, however, began during pandemic lock downs – when we were all ordered to stay home.  The home, the house, became the central location for all life’s activities.

Single Story takes the idea of the house as a situation of place and circumstance.  The basis for each piece is, of course, the house. I depict it as an icon of the colonial home, of the American dream.

Each icon is overlaid with a stitched or collaged element. Even in its simplicity – a few stitches, French knots, or the image of a chicken – these elements can completely change the implied situation. The combination tells an individual, single story.

About Susan Hensel Gallery

Opened September 10th, 2004 Susan Hensel Gallery was a gallery/ workspace presenting 5-6 shows per year devoted to the concept of narrative in the arts in an intimate space, with hardwood floors and high tin ceilings. The Susan Hensel Gallery is now both a window gallery on Cedar Avenue, the main thoroughfare in south Minneapolis and an online venture represented on Artsy.net.

In March 2013, the interior space reverted to a working studio for Susan Hensel where she continues to work on small and large scale artwork with an attitude. You can find her current work at Susan Hensel Projects

The studio remains open to the public by appointment or chance, on Monday-Saturday, 10 am-5 pm.  You are welcome to drop by this gallery/workspace at any time, but a call ahead prevents frustration. The well lit Windows on Cedar Project are available to be seen 24 hours a day.
