Just Looking in action

Just Looking in action I have not received all the photos yet. But you can begin to see the installation in action here. Friday was a delightfully cool night for an opening. A gentle crowd arrived and stayed and played with the interactive video. Mary, in the middle, learned that she could line her own eyes up with various pairs of glasses. Watch the website. I hope to have more visuals and have the audio compressed and on line sometime next week. Pictured with the EYES is the videographer, John Hensel, my son. Who came in and worked all week developing programs to film, duplicate and project attendees. The EYES project is one he showed at Oberlin College several years ago. Seemed perfect for the topic at hand. Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects, meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. Coming soon! Revisions of the American Dream! This new show is a special event! The curator, Zach Pearl, began working at Susan Hensel Gallery last year as an intern. He now works here as my gallery assistant. Keeping me sane and taking over more of the administration weekly. This show is HIS baby! I am pleased to have him work here on so many levels and very pleased to support him in presenting this national show! June 6th—July 7th, 2008 Opening Reception Friday June 6th @ 7p.m. This Summer, the Susan Hensel Gallery in South Minneapolis will offer the chance to engage in a different kind of political dialogue. Opening on Friday June 6th, 2008 at 7 p.m., an exhibition entitled, "Revisions of the American Dream". Will showcase thirteen nationally selected artists whose work addresses what the American Dream has become for the modern-day citizen. The work featured will represent the gamut of media. Welcome to Susan Hensel Gallery January 22, 2008 Welcome! This is the virgin voyage of the Susan Hensel Gallery Blog! I really have no idea how I will use this space, except to keep you up to date with what is happening in the gallery and what I am planning! First, let's talk about the current show: Celestial Navigation by Karen Hanmer. Karen is a Chicago area artist who travelled in last week to install a show that was designed for THIS gallery. It is a peaceful place to contemplate the stars and find a bit of peace in the universe, if only for a moment. In the neighborhood

In the neighborhood (Dan Bisgaard, Kanti Jocelyn-Bisgaard, Peter Wilson, Sul and David) Do you know these people? They are making a difference. South Minneapolis continues to develop as an exciting place for art. Artists James Michael Lawrence ( who will have a show at the gallery in January) and Peter Wilson sent me these photos of murals just down the street from me at Laurra Auto Service, the corner of 18th and Cedar. I had the opportunity to meet the artists, Sul and David, the other day. What a delightful meeting! These two men are devoted to using the arts to improve the neighborhood. KUDOS! The murals are painted by Sul, the words evidently provided by David. The Wedding Reception was Delicious

The Wedding Reception was Delicious Friday, May 2, the wedding reception was delicious! Betsy bakes a 5 layer wedding cake. She learned about baking "fancy stuff" when her daughter was in middle school. And insisted on studying the fine art of pastry! A bit of it rubbed off on Mom!  Late in the evening a couple of other guests arrived! Mr and Mrs Teddy Bear have gone next door to visit with my god-daughter Lisa and her little sister. That is their proud Granny Cathy keeping them from flying away! Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects, meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. A Slight Pause... The gallery will be on PAUSE until February 14. I will be away from the building, making art. If you are desperate, please email me. I may be able to arrange for a friend to let you in to see Karen Hanmer's show. The participants have been chosen for Reader's Art 8. I will post the names here at a later time. Meanwhile, stay warm! Reader’s Art 8 selection begins

2023-06-08T02:04:04-04:00Articles, Artists, Art|

Reader's Art 8 selection begins Reader's Art 8: handmade with care. Nearly 200 images have arrived in my mailbox this year. Beautiful books of all sorts from all over the country. The postcard has been ordered and preliminary sorting has begun. It will be a hard decision this year because all the work is topnotch. The primary decision to be made right now is How large will the emphasis on handmade paper be? I always jury the show as a single entity. That means that I look at how the work goes together and how it will flow in the space. Will the show, in total, make sense? While this has always been a survey show, the pieces are chosen for their place in the gestalt as well as for their intrinsic quality. It is an interesting process. I put out the call for art with a vague idea in mind...with some expectations of how a show might look. But all shows, and this one in particular, seem to tell me what is going on out there. The entries dictate the show by demonstrating what artists are concerned about right now. There is one more day to receive [...]

A Language Beyond Words

A Language Beyond Words In the House of the Mineral Spirits The performance is past, but the show continues. There are multiple videos to be seen. On opening night, in conversation, an onlooker and I agreed that there is "something there" that we could not quite describe in Dean Ebben's videos. There is vulnerability, at times innocence and almost always mystery. We agreed that his work is full of a language beyond words. Pictured above is a still from the video If I Could Roll It Out Of Me. This is the video that convinced me to invite Dean to create a show. The show continues to the end of February. Susan Hensel Gallery hours: Monday 10-5 and by very generous appointment.
