A Slight Pause…

2023-06-08T01:50:38-04:00Articles, Artists, Art|

A Slight Pause... The gallery will be on PAUSE until February 14. I will be away from the building, making art. If you are desperate, please email me. I may be able to arrange for a friend to let you in to see Karen Hanmer's show. The participants have been chosen for Reader's Art 8. I will post the names here at a later time. Meanwhile, stay warm! Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects, meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. It is a gallery where experimental ideas and works of the hand join to create unique sensory experiences. Opened September 10th, 2004 Susan Hensel Gallery is a gallery/ workspace presenting 5-6 shows per year in an intimate space, with hardwood floors and high tin ceilings. In 2013 the interior space reverted to a working studio for Susan Hensel where she continues to work on small and largescale artwork that engages both sculptural and cultural space. You can find her current work at www.SusanHenselProjects.com. The Susan Hensel Gallery is now both a large window gallery on Cedar Avenue, a main thoroughfare in south Minneapolis, and an online venture represented on [...]

Reader’s Art 8 selection begins

2023-06-08T02:04:04-04:00Articles, Artists, Art|

Reader's Art 8 selection begins Reader's Art 8: handmade with care. Nearly 200 images have arrived in my mailbox this year. Beautiful books of all sorts from all over the country. The postcard has been ordered and preliminary sorting has begun. It will be a hard decision this year because all the work is topnotch. The primary decision to be made right now is How large will the emphasis on handmade paper be? I always jury the show as a single entity. That means that I look at how the work goes together and how it will flow in the space. Will the show, in total, make sense? While this has always been a survey show, the pieces are chosen for their place in the gestalt as well as for their intrinsic quality. It is an interesting process. I put out the call for art with a vague idea in mind...with some expectations of how a show might look. But all shows, and this one in particular, seem to tell me what is going on out there. The entries dictate the show by demonstrating what artists are concerned about right now. There is one more day to receive [...]

Gazing at Stars

2023-06-08T02:04:21-04:00Articles|

Gazing at Stars It's a bit hard to gaze at stars tonight. The clouds have moved in bringing warmer temperatures with them: sweatshirt weather in the middle of the day. Neighbors and a class of teens came in from Minnesota Center for Books Arts to see the show today. Karen's tour de force was, as always, apparent. Standing among the stars on a gray day is an uplifting experience. Even as I write this, TalkingImageConnection, a group of writers, is busily at work, writing original prose and poetry in response to Karen's installation. Her installation is "site-specific" meaning it was conceived of and designed for this space. So too is their work. Most of the poets were able to come in for the opening, soak up the experience and talk with Karen. On Saturday, February 23, 7 pm, Jean Larsen, Ace Moore, Alison Morse, Jeff Skemp and Charlotte Sullivan will reveal their "site specific" writing in a lively reading. Cold Temperatures, Warm showings

2023-06-08T02:04:30-04:00Articles|

Cold Temperatures, Warm showings Celestial Navigation continues to warm local bodies even as the mercury hovers at or below zero. We hardy souls have become unused to the cold, cold depths of yesteryear! The artists who came by yesterday were mesmerized by the structures and materials of Karen's installation. The six foot inkjet prints are tours de force! Not one stripe, not one blotch, pure bleeds, on Japanese paper...How does she do it? The precision of the books is amazing as well. The hinges function flawlessly, the technique is expert and nearly invisible. You cannot resist playing with Karen's objects. They form mountains, valleys and quiet meanders across the pedestals. I Will get the Hang of This!

2023-06-08T02:05:06-04:00Articles|

I Will get the Hang of This! So, I started this yesterday. I do not promise daily missives...I don't manage daily anything! But I will try to keep readers up to date on the happenings at the gallery . Tonight, and every 4th Wednesday, 7pm, Artists Unite meet here. This is a still nascent, amoeba like artists salon for local artists, primarily from South Minneapolis. On any given week we could talk about art history, new tools, new shows, show our artwork, read our poems...It is still very loose. It, prehaps, needs tightening up. While we drink wine tonight, I will suggest that we talk about the phenomenon of the Frida Kahlo show that just closed at the Walker Art Center. A Language Beyond Words

2023-06-08T02:04:48-04:00Articles, News, Artists, Art|

A Language Beyond Words In the House of the Mineral Spirits The performance is past, but the show continues. There are multiple videos to be seen. On opening night, in conversation, an onlooker and I agreed that there is "something there" that we could not quite describe in Dean Ebben's videos. There is vulnerability, at times innocence and almost always mystery. We agreed that his work is full of a language beyond words. Pictured above is a still from the video If I Could Roll It Out Of Me. This is the video that convinced me to invite Dean to create a show. The show continues to the end of February.
