Wrestling Books into Shape

Wrestling Books into Shape Sometimes books need extra handling to present themselves properly. Zach and Jon wrestled with Doug Beube's work for the afternoon. These altered books arrive looking like ordinary closed books. The trick with the book LIFE is to slowly and carefully sort the pages into their ideal space, then tilt the book up, and let the pages cascade! Drilling holes again. Ebben has Deep ties to Minneapolis Dean Ebben has deep ties here. Although he has lived and worked in NYC for years, be grew up in the Twin Cities, graduating from Perpich Center for Art Education(lucky guy!). Through out his educational and professional career he has always returned. He has been a frequent instructor at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. I think he interned at Cave Paper (It that right, Dean?). In the House of the Mineral Spirits, opening January 14, is inspired and fueled by his relationship with the Twin Cities. Reader’s Art 10 and such

2023-06-08T02:02:02-04:00Articles, News, Art|

Reader's Art 10 and such Whew! The boxes are in the mail! So many books! So many boxes! The next show EARTH & AIR: art for the environment, by Leslie Sobel is hung. I have been building stretchers for a series of my pieces that are being hung in a show this weekend. The gallery looks like a BOMB! went off.   But, a wonderful surprise came in the mail today.   Book Arts Newsletter, No. 57, May 2010, an increasingly large publication out of the UK, arrived today with a review of Reader's Art 10. You can find it online at http://www.bookarts.uwe.ac.uk/newspdfs/57.pdf. The nice thing about reading it online is that it is in FULL color. Go take a look. Our article starts on page 34.  Here is a quick snapshot of the poetry reading...poets and listeners reading before all the poets arrived. Books that Fly

Books that Fly Some books cannot be contained! Wayne Mc Neil's UNBOUND is one of them. The pages of the altered book became cranes and flew across the gallery. Jody Reeb-Meyers book unaccountably chose to float. Maybe the holes in it made it lighter than air. Holey Book of Arts. Even Betsy Dollar's work:An Inter-generational Dialogue on the Color Pink needed to float high! Reader's Art 10 opens Friday, March 12, 7-9pm. Graffiti prevention stencil

2023-06-08T01:32:30-04:00Articles, News, Art|

Graffiti prevention stencil Graffiti prevention stencil. While musicians played at Cupa Joe's, Zach, Eric & I began the demonstration stencil process. We taped the stencil edges up with duct tape. Zach rolled little loops of tape and placed them behind the floppier edges. Surprisingly, the wind made the styrene flap around a bit. We masked the area around the stencil with paper. Nothing fancy, newspaper would work. Zach and I sprayed several colors through the stencil. It was important to hold the sprayer away about 8 inches or so, to reduce over spray on the really rough stucco. When the stencil was removed, the design was pretty clear. I did not expect sharp edges. We flipped the stencil over and did another round of colors. The bottom of the stencil was too hard an edge for my taste. So, Zach and I taped off an area and filled it in with the remaining green and purple paint. Zachary Pearl was the artist who designed this first stencil for Corcoran Neighborhood. He gracefully agreed to help do this one. It was pretty easy. We spent maybe 2 or 2 1/2 hours including clean-up. It is helpful to have a [...]

What forms might healing take?

2023-06-08T01:33:03-04:00Articles, News, Art|

What forms might healing take? I became aware of the Combat Paper Project and the Warrior Writers about a year ago. Through a contact at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. The email said they thought these artists were right up my alley. Subsequently, I showed a Combat Paper Portfolio, made of handmade paper from pulped uniforms. A catharsis for the group of vets who created it, a catharsis for the vets who viewed it here at Susan Hensel Gallery. Art takes various forms: comforting, recognizable, new, challenging, frightening. Healing does too. The Combat Papermakers and the Warrior Writers offer the opportunity for local vets of any conflict, of anytime, free of charge, to collaborate in a creative re-invention, a re-organization, a re-formatting...a new way of thinking about the personal costs of their service. The Combat Paper Project in Residence at MCBA September 21–28, 2009 MCBA and Susan Hensel Gallery are proud to host The Combat Paper Project. For a week-long residency in MCBA’s studios. Through paper making workshops, local veterans are given the chance to use uniforms worn in combat to create cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beaten into fiber and formed into sheets [...]

How to Build an Igloo?

2023-06-08T01:33:09-04:00Articles, News, Art|

How to Build an Igloo? How to Build an Igloo? Summer is finally here. Warm but not too hot...and we are thinking about igloos! Local artist Andrea Miller will be wrestling with coal and ice and sod in my gallery as she wrestles with the issues of global warming and her own carbon footprint. The show starts Saturday, September 5, more or less at 2pm. With a performance by Andrea using these materials. You are invited to observe anytime between 2 and 5 pm. We really do not know how long the performance will take...how long does it take an ice shelf to melt? After the performance is complete, Andrea will clean up and re-organize the remains into a multimedia installation that will open to the public. With the usual fanfare of good food and drink, on Friday, September 18, 7-9pm.
