Ebben has Deep ties to Minneapolis Dean Ebben has deep ties here. Although he has lived and worked in NYC for years, be grew up in the Twin Cities, graduating from Perpich Center for Art Education(lucky guy!). Through out his educational and professional career he has always returned. He has been a frequent instructor at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. I think he interned at Cave Paper (It that right, Dean?). In the House of the Mineral Spirits, opening January 14, is inspired and fueled by his relationship with the Twin Cities. It is a truly diverse show, as diverse as the community that formed him. It will have drawings on over beaten flax handmade paper from Cave Paper. Boxes on Boxes! The boxes for Reader's Art are piling up! The computer lumbers under the photo rendering stress! Old boxes are reclaimed from storage to pack up Uncommon Textiles! Uncommon Textiles, with Sara Christensen Blair and Rachel Star Suntop was well attended right up to the last possible moment! One of the last people to see that show is one of the artists in Reader's Art 10: Buzz Spector. Buzz has been around the book world for years, teaching, writing and producing artwork that comments on the book and literature. He and I had a series of "small world" encounters in our brief visit. He knows Rachel Suntop. He taught with her mother, Bea Nettles, years ago and stays in touch with Rachel on Facebook. Until recently, he taught at Cornell, in my home town of Ithaca, NY and he is now Dean at Washington University in St. Louis...a school I came very close to attending (42 years ago!). White Insistence, one of the three books he will have in the show, is a limited edition printed to be torn-away so the story is revealed across multiple pages at once. Art across town Meanwhile, while the dust was settling from the opening of Reader's Art. I continued to be involved with the inaugural exhibition sponsored by SMARTS (South Minneapolis Arts Business Association). The Arts of the Community opened last night at Inter media Arts, in S. Lyndale in Minneapolis.Forty artists provided 70 pieces of art in this surprisingly competitive show. We looked at over 250 pieces of art on jury day. Wonderful art, all different kinds of art, big art, little art, challenging art. This week, while I was recovering from the Reader's Art opening, David Luke hung the show. He did a marvelous job. The opening was well attended. these shots were taken toward the waning end of the night. A great time was had by all. Reader's Art 10 and such Whew! The boxes are in the mail! So many books! So many boxes! The next show EARTH & AIR: art for the environment, by Leslie Sobel is hung. I have been building stretchers for a series of my pieces that are being hung in a show this weekend. The gallery looks like a BOMB! went off.   But, a wonderful surprise came in the mail today.   Book Arts Newsletter, No. 57, May 2010, an increasingly large publication out of the UK, arrived today with a review of Reader's Art 10. Books that Fly Some books cannot be contained! Wayne Mc Neil's UNBOUND is one of them. The pages of the altered book became cranes and flew across the gallery. Jody Reeb-Meyers book unaccountably chose to float. Maybe the holes in it made it lighter than air. Holey Book of Arts. Graffiti prevention stencil Graffiti prevention stencil. While musicians played at Cupa Joe's, Zach, Eric & I began the demonstration stencil process. We taped the stencil edges up with duct tape. Zach rolled little loops of tape and placed them behind the floppier edges. Surprisingly, the wind made the styrene flap around a bit. We masked the area around the stencil with paper. Nothing fancy, newspaper would work. Zach and I sprayed several colors through the stencil. It was important to hold the sprayer away about 8 inches or so, to reduce over spray on the really rough stucco. When the stencil was removed, the design was pretty clear. I did not expect sharp edges. We flipped the stencil over and did another round of colors. The bottom of the stencil was too hard an edge for my taste. So, Zach and I taped off an area and filled it in with the remaining green and purple paint. Zachary Pearl was the artist who designed this first stencil for Corcoran Neighborhood.
