Jon in the Venice Biennale!

2023-06-08T02:10:28-04:00Articles, News, Artists, Art|

Jon in the Venice Biennale! I just received an email from Jon Coffelt who had the show COMMUNION here in the gallery. A piece of cyberspace art that he collaborated on has been accepted in the Venice Biennale http://biennale.net/ in the Padiglione Pavilion. http://padiglioneinternet.com/ Jon says, ""Wikipedia Art" http://wikipediaart.org/ and http://wikipediaart.org/brief-history/ originators Nathaniel Stern and Scott Kildall conceived the project and Brian Sherwin, Patrick Lichty and myself worked through the specifics of how this would work on Wikipedia. I published the original piece on Wikipedia for the guys and we all fleshed it out over many hours before it received an AfD (article for deletion). Since that time there has been many articles that have talked about the controversy and the hypocrisy behind it. We have been working on this project for some time now." All Thing Electoral continues with a Grass Roots celebration

2023-06-08T02:10:45-04:00Articles|

All Thing Electoral continues with a Grass Roots celebration The show goes on! Listen to KFAI Radio's Art Matters Archive of October 2 for a discussion of All Things Electoral. I am forever grateful for the support that KFAI lends to this gallery, from Art Matters hosted by Marya Morstad to Catalyst hosted by Lydia Howell. Both shows have covered the gallery since the day we opened four years ago. Thanks!!! We here in Minneapolis can get real hot under the collar about politics. Really like the candidates we like. We really believe in helping one another. The ideal combination of grass roots and gentle governance seems to be what we seek. In that spirit, the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization supports and assists homeowners and renters in many ways. One of the ways has been their support of Elise Kyllo's work with residents. For the past two years Elise, with neighborhood support, warm bodies, paint brushes and free paint from Valspar, has been muraling oft graffitied walls. That's Elise in the green sweater, more or less free of paint. Saturday night, gallery supporters and mural participants came from far and wide to celebrate her contribution to the livability [...]

IN SERVICE OF COMMUNITY

2023-06-08T02:10:53-04:00Exhibition, Articles, News, Art|

IN SERVICE OF COMMUNITY IN SERVICE OF COMMUNITY. MEETING Wed 5/27 6:00 p.m. A BRAINSTORMING MEETING CREATING NEW FORMS OF PUBLIC ART TO COMBAT NOXIOUS GRAFFITI Corcoran Neighborhood has received seed money and is seeking artists and other creatives to help brainstorm and develop a startlingly new ( to Minneapolis) graffiti prevention program that uses public artforms. (Please note that around here we use the term 'graffiti' to refer to gang tags. Which are a serious problem in our neighborhood and are starkly different than public art, including aerosol art, including the great work that goes on at Intermedia Arts etc.) IN SERVICE OF COMMUNITY. CNO organizer Eric Gustafson traveled to Oaxaca city, Mexico in April 2008. Oaxaca has problems with graffiti and tagging that are similar, or arguably worse, than Minneapolis'. Oaxaca also has a thriving creative class and “Do-It-Yourself” ethic that recalls the Corcoran/Powderhorn area of Minneapolis. Widely evident in Oaxaca City is a simple but compelling form of public art that any audience will recognize as serving multiple purposes. To beautify, to celebrate local culture and heroes. To provoke thought about ideas and issues, and to prevent future tagging. Most of these images are simple [...]

Reader’s Art 9 is coming soon

2023-06-08T02:11:01-04:00Articles, News|

Reader's Art 9 is coming soon Art in the Palm of Your Hand READER’S ART 9: small, smaller, smallest March 7- April 15 Susan Hensel Gallery is pleased to be opening the ninth annual Reader’s Art exhibition of artists books. In the year 2000, back in the wilds of mid-Michigan, Susan decided it was time to start showcasing book artists for Midwest audiences. Right from the beginning, in a tiny little alternative space, The Art Apartment, in East Lansing, Michigan, the show found not only participants (the easy part) but supporters and collectors. How ideal to begin the now venerable show of often tiny, apartment sized artworks, in that tiny eponymous space. Now in it’s ninth year, Reader’s Art has showcased book artists from all over the United States and Canada, some famous, some totally unknown. Each year has had a loosely applied theme. This year the theme is SIZE. Most of the books will fit in the palm of your hand and some are downright tiny! This year, 22 artists from 11 states are sending in their work. For the last few years the gallery has showcased several artists. Exhibiting their work in depth. This year [...]

COMMUNION preview

2023-06-08T02:11:07-04:00Articles|

COMMUNION preview Juliet Blacksher, a dear friend of Jon's found out he collected antique fabrics. When she saw this 1930's silkscreen print, she bought all she could and had him make this miniature from some of it. The print is almost cubist with a 50's flair. Jon thinks artists take cues from fabrics more often than we want to imagine. 1998 About Susan Hensel Gallery Opened September 10th, 2004 Susan Hensel Gallery was a gallery/ workspace presenting 5-6 shows per year devoted to the concept of narrative in the arts in an intimate space, with hardwood floors and high tin ceilings. The Susan Hensel Gallery is now both a window gallery on Cedar Avenue, the main thoroughfare in south Minneapolis and an online venture represented on Artsy.net. In March 2013, the interior space reverted to a working studio for Susan Hensel where she continues to work on small and largescale artwork with an attitude. Wonderful Stuff!

2023-06-08T02:11:16-04:00Articles, Art|

Wonderful Stuff! COMMUNION opened Saturday, April 18, with a shared meal and a wonderful discussion about art and fashion. Among Jon Coffelt, Carolyn G. Halliday, Kathleen Richert and Betsy Dollar. Issues of identity and the stories we tell with our clothes were discussed. I love the shadows cast by the little clothes! Jon told the individual stories of many of the hand stitched clothes. Like the story of Marlee; the story of the prom dress; A story of Ruth Bernhard's memorial to Stonewall; story of Matushka's mastectomy dress designed by Versace. The soldier PJ's that memorialized the "last camping trip." And so many more. An interview with Sarah Haig

2023-06-08T02:12:45-04:00Articles|

An interview with Sarah Haig An interview with Minneapolis Sarah Haig about Words Unspoken: breaking the cycle. Sarah recently moved to Minneapolis from upstate New York to pursue and Master of Fine Art degree. The installation will be on exhibit November 7-December 20, 2008, in Art space at Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church, 1620 E. 46th St., Minneapolis and part of the show Leap of Faith 4: let peace reign. An interview with Sarah Haig Sue: Tell me about Words Unspoken: breaking the cycle. Sarah: It is a large-scale installation that makes visible and present the anonymous words of survivors of abuse. Sue: What sorts of materials is it made out of? Sarah: It is sheets of muslin, Plexiglas, photos, drawings, and words. The muslin is huge, hung from the ceiling. It was stained, burned, ripped to create the right energy for the words. Sue: Where did the words come from? Stained, Burned, And Ripped Sarah: The words were anonymously donated by survivors of abuse. I made this while living in a small town in upstate New York, where everybody knew everybody. I put the word out that I was looking for people’s stories. Sue: Did you advertise? Send [...]
