Wrestling Books into Shape

Wrestling Books into Shape Sometimes books need extra handling to present themselves properly. Zach and Jon wrestled with Doug Beube's work for the afternoon. These altered books arrive looking like ordinary closed books. The trick with the book LIFE is to slowly and carefully sort the pages into their ideal space, then tilt the book up, and let the pages cascade! Drilling holes again. Art across town

Art across town Meanwhile, while the dust was settling from the opening of Reader's Art. I continued to be involved with the inaugural exhibition sponsored by SMARTS (South Minneapolis Arts Business Association). The Arts of the Community opened last night at Inter media Arts, in S. Lyndale in Minneapolis.Forty artists provided 70 pieces of art in this surprisingly competitive show. We looked at over 250 pieces of art on jury day. Wonderful art, all different kinds of art, big art, little art, challenging art. This week, while I was recovering from the Reader's Art opening, David Luke hung the show. He did a marvelous job. The opening was well attended. these shots were taken toward the waning end of the night. A great time was had by all. Reader's Art 10 and such Whew! The boxes are in the mail! So many books! So many boxes! The next show EARTH & AIR: art for the environment, by Leslie Sobel is hung. I have been building stretchers for a series of my pieces that are being hung in a show this weekend. The gallery looks like a BOMB! went off.   But, a wonderful surprise came in the mail today.   Book Arts Newsletter, No. 57, May 2010, an increasingly large publication out of the UK, arrived today with a review of Reader's Art 10. You can find it online at http://www.bookarts.uwe.ac.uk/newspdfs/57.pdf. The nice thing about reading it online is that it is in FULL color. Go take a look. Our article starts on page 34.  Here is a quick snapshot of the poetry reading...poets and listeners reading before all the poets arrived. Books that Fly

Books that Fly Some books cannot be contained! Wayne Mc Neil's UNBOUND is one of them. The pages of the altered book became cranes and flew across the gallery. Jody Reeb-Meyers book unaccountably chose to float. Maybe the holes in it made it lighter than air. Holey Book of Arts. Even Betsy Dollar's work:An Inter-generational Dialogue on the Color Pink needed to float high! Reader's Art 10 opens Friday, March 12, 7-9pm. What forms might healing take?

2023-06-08T01:33:03-04:00Articles, News, Art|

What forms might healing take? I became aware of the Combat Paper Project and the Warrior Writers about a year ago. Through a contact at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. The email said they thought these artists were right up my alley. Subsequently, I showed a Combat Paper Portfolio, made of handmade paper from pulped uniforms. A catharsis for the group of vets who created it, a catharsis for the vets who viewed it here at Susan Hensel Gallery. Art takes various forms: comforting, recognizable, new, challenging, frightening. Healing does too. The Combat Papermakers and the Warrior Writers offer the opportunity for local vets of any conflict, of anytime, free of charge, to collaborate in a creative re-invention, a re-organization, a re-formatting...a new way of thinking about the personal costs of their service. The Combat Paper Project in Residence at MCBA September 21–28, 2009 MCBA and Susan Hensel Gallery are proud to host The Combat Paper Project. For a week-long residency in MCBA’s studios. Through paper making workshops, local veterans are given the chance to use uniforms worn in combat to create cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beaten into fiber and formed into sheets [...]
