An Early Shirt An Early Shirt. Reader's Art continues to have visitors. Tara O'Brien's book is especially popular right now, what with all the economic news! My response is, "Who knew fine binding could be made so small?" It even has leather doublures! In other news, I just learned Friday, that Jon Coffelt will be coming out from New York for the opening of Communion, barring family emergencies. Today we begin showing you a few of the miniatures that Jon Coffelt will be bringing here in April.17 Interestingly, Jon Coffelt was able to see the selvage on this particular original and found out that it was made in 1952. He actually made two shirts from this garment. The other has long sleeves for whatever reason. Both are 100% screen-printed cotton. This example has a button-down collar. About Susan Hensel Gallery – Contemporary Art by Susan Hensel Opened September 10th, 2004, Susan Hensel Gallery was a gallery/ workspace presenting 5-6 shows per year devoted to the concept of narrative in the arts in an intimate space. Reader's Art gets reviewed Many thanks to Susannah Schouweiler for a good review on MinnPost.com. http://www.minnpost.com/artsarena/2009/03/11/7292/readers%E2%80%99_art_show_ It is cold today in a way that only Minneapolis can be in March! The front windows are frosted up to the very top. We began yesterday with rain and very wet snow. By this morning, it was below zero again and all that humidity froze on the windows. When the sun hits the windows this afternoon. We may be able to see the artwork in the windows again! Meanwhile, Zach sent over his picture of the early moments of the opening. And also a couple very nice shots of the show. Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects. Meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. More about Archipelago

ARCHIPELAGO A COMMUNITY OF DRAWINGS BY ZACH PEARL February 22-March 1, 2009 An archipelago (pronounced /ɑrkəˈpɛləgoʊ/) is defined as being a chain or cluster of islands. They are usually found in the open sea, isolated from larger landmasses, and their formations are odd and intricate. Collectively, the islands of an archipelago record a moment in history; an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, a rising sea. All factors to which they owe their existence. Individually, the islands are fragments. Pieces to a larger puzzle that tells the entirety of their story. In this way, the islands are a community, an identity that is interdependent, sharing a common origin while living and growing together. Zach Pearl In his new body of work, Zach Pearl develops these concepts of the archipelago and of community through his drawings. Highly-designed, highly-detailed, and above all surreal. Pearl’s Archipelago series is made up of 18 “portraits”. These portraits are of fictional characters, faces and creatures emerging from islands that float in an eerily calm ocean of white space. These portraits, Pearl describes as, “…partly autobiographical…facets of his own self. And his experiences as a current 20-something”. Perfectly suspended between the carefree nature of his teenage years [...]

Just Looking

Just Looking People who have been in the studio are mesmerized. They spend time looking and looking and looking. When they return for the opening on August 8th, I think they will be surprised by the transformation. My son, John Hensel, arrives tomorrow and we will work together on a computer program that will transform the experience. I don't want to show you too much and spoil the experience! So, the photo is intentionally enigmatic. Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects. Meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. Welcome to Susan Hensel Gallery January 22, 2008 Welcome! This is the virgin voyage of the Susan Hensel Gallery Blog! I really have no idea how I will use this space, except to keep you up to date with what is happening in the gallery and what I am planning! First, let's talk about the current show: Celestial Navigation by Karen Hanmer. Karen is a Chicago area artist who travelled in last week to install a show that was designed for THIS gallery. It is a peaceful place to contemplate the stars and find a bit of peace in the universe, if only for a moment. Celestial Navigation..the final programs

Celestial Navigation..the final programs Talking Image Connection wrote their hearts out and read the evening of February 23 to a packed house. Most of the time the gallery space does not seem "too small." This was one of the other times... The reading was strong, exciting, at times uproarious, and just plain wonderful. The chapbook sold out immediately. The final event, before pack-up, was a breakfast hosted by Karen Hanmer for friends of the gallery and fans of her work. The fine fruits, pastries and excellent coffee were catered by the Firefly Bistro2, right next door to the gallery. We were especially pleased to feed the teenagers of the Minnesota Center for Book Arts In Design program. Do watch this space. Reader's Art 8 is coming soon! A Language Beyond Words

A Language Beyond Words In the House of the Mineral Spirits The performance is past, but the show continues. There are multiple videos to be seen. On opening night, in conversation, an onlooker and I agreed that there is "something there" that we could not quite describe in Dean Ebben's videos. There is vulnerability, at times innocence and almost always mystery. We agreed that his work is full of a language beyond words. Pictured above is a still from the video If I Could Roll It Out Of Me. This is the video that convinced me to invite Dean to create a show. The show continues to the end of February. Susan Hensel Gallery hours: Monday 10-5 and by very generous appointment.
