Dean Ebben: rolling in the dark

It seems to me that Dean Ebben’s mythology is one of mystery, struggle, and redemption. This was the reason I invited Dean Ebben to develop a show for Susan Hensel Gallery.

I had seen his video If I could roll it out of me (still from the video above). In this video, a man, Dean, places himself in a “wilderness” to roll until he could physically roll no more.

It captured my attention on a deep level. It began as the child begins, with a simple joyful act. I remember ecstatically rolling down cool grassy hills as a child, smelling the earth, the worms and beetles, the new growth under a warm summer sky. But we grow and we grow up and the simple acts change. They are more difficult and fraught with meaning and mystery. Come see this video and more :

Susan Hensel Gallery

The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects, meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. It is a gallery where experimental ideas and works of the hand join. All to create unique sensory experiences. Opened September 10th, 2004 Susan Hensel Gallery is a gallery/ workspace presenting 5-6 shows per year in an intimate space. With hardwood floors and high tin ceilings.

In 2013 the interior space reverted to a working studio for Susan Hensel. Where she continues to work on small and largescale artwork that engages both sculptural and cultural space. You can find her current work at www.SusanHenselProjects.com. The Susan Hensel Gallery is now both a large window gallery on Cedar Avenue, the main thoroughfare in south Minneapolis and an online venture represented on Artsy.net.
