A Long post about Vacations and Bathrooms I just returned from 2 glorious, restorative weeks on the shores of Lake Superior.  A beautiful surprise  appeared shortly before I packed up to come back to Minneapolis, were 2 beach artworks by Dale Kennedy. I arrived to a torn -up house.  The Gallery looks like a hazmat site!  Do you remember the scene in the movie ET when they wrapped the house and entered in hazmat suits to try to capture ET?  That's what the gallery/studio looks like! "Why?" you may ask. Well, the renovation continues.  I am installing a full bathroom on the first floor. It takes away some of  the exhibition space, but will be worth it in the end. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the house, more bathroom action. As you probably know, I live above the gallery. The bathroom upstairs was falling apart...in fact it is a wonder the toilet did not fall through the floor. But when I got home a few days ago, everything was stripped out of that bathroom and the fixtures were back ordered! My personal bathroom as it looks today. Gallery Musings Today was spent on promo for the Wool Market yawning from lack of sleep. Evaluating the results of the current show in the gallery updating the website. Interviewing several people for the potential new position of gallery associate in January, photographing fiber and recording dye results. The work day flew by, with both Zach and I smiling as we we realized our work responsibilities were waning. He has finished 2 of his three jobs before grad school and I am almost to the sabbatical date! We are both waxing philosophical/nostalgic. Even though we will be working together another 2 months!   Leslie Sobels' show comes down after Memorial Day. But we will maintain our Monday hours, getting caught up on gallery admin and planning. Web restructure and repair, generalized computer stuff! Our Fridays, which may occasionally become Thursdays or Wednesdays (call before you come). Will be spent dying and cleaning out the basement cracks, crannies and crevices to make a fuller functioning lower studio. Installation is nearly done Installing My Father's Religion is not difficult, but it is slow and painstaking. It involves wire, tools, plumbing pipe, picture wire, monofilament, a level...and forming, re-forming, frogging and knitting. The day was made much easier by the participation of Mark Carlson. Peace Fibres- stitching a soulful world Serendipity has been such a strong feature of my life. When one is able to cultivate to attitude of welcome, of "yes", one can see the connections and the offerings that the world has to give. Today was another opportunity of "yes." While working diligently on number crunching and financial projections ( yuck!), I received a phone call from a Minnesota author wishing to see the current exhibition. While Libbie Soffer was here, I attended Shepherd's Harvest and she went to the Textile Center and we both met Karen Lohn, the author of Peace Fibres. Karen and her friend Katie, a contributor to the book, spent time among Libbie's textile stories. A thoroughly delightful respite from numbers! COMMUNION preview COMMUNION preview. Juliet Blacksher, a dear friend of Jon's found out he collected antique fabrics. When she saw this 1930's silkscreen print, she bought all she could and had him make this miniature from some of it. The print is almost cubist with a 50's flair. Soldier PJ’s

Soldier PJ's These were Jon's pajamas when he was 6 years old. Before the time of Disney and Warner Brothers cartoon characters, boys were limited cowboys, toy soldiers and the occasional deer. Jon loved his soldier pjs dearly. Speaking of deer, his family went on a camping trip and had to take their pjs with them. It rained the whole way there and since they were pulling a boat behind the car everything in the boat became very wet. Once they set up the tent his mom thought is would be a good idea to try to dry out their clothes on the grill. For whatever reason, she chose to dry out Jon's flannel red housecoat with the deer heads first. Almost immediately they caught on fire. Luckily his soldier pajamas weren’t harmed at the time. Incidentally, after this horror and Jon's crying for a solid hour, his family decided to call it quits in the middle of the night and head home. They were tired, sad, broken hearten and very damp. In the Windows: Lyz Wendland Stillwater, MN artist, Lyz Wendland Received a Minnesota Artists Initiative Grant to create and mount this site specific installation. While it is similar to her Phipps Center for the Arts installation, pictured above. It was made especially for these windows on Cedar Avenue. For best viewing, come by after dark and see them glow! Lyz Wendland artist statement My work reflects my interest in mapping and architecture. Especially the appeal of repetition and the reassuring promise of reliability. My mainly abstract pieces deal with the comfort offered by repeating forms and actions and they examine the subtle rigidity of my cookie-cutter neighborhood. Which offers a sometimes clear and sometimes blurred delineation between public and private spaces. The connection of the everyday mundane intertwines with predictability of structure. The lines, shapes and forms I observe in my suburban neighborhood inspire my current body of work made up of layered process of drawing, painting, installation and sculpture.
