While the video edits. Andrea Miller is busy editing the video of HOW TO BUILD AN IGLOO and thinking about the contents and contexts of the installation that opens with a gala reception September, 18, 7-9pm.   But meanwhile, there are things to think about.   The first is the COMBAT PAPER PROJECT and the WARRIOR WRITERS PROJECT. Both are coming to MCBA, in the WEEK FOR PEACE, September 19-28. "From uniform to pulp, battlefield to workshop, warrior to artist"... a healing set of events designed for combat veterans and their friends. There are many different opportunities to participate or attend. The public is welcome to visit MCBA’s studios and view the project in progress through the duration of the residency.  Special events are scheduled to encourage interaction with the veteran artists, but visitors are welcome anytime during MCBA’s open hours. Check the website or call 612.215.2520 for more information. Coming in October...This image is just one corner of the central image associated with TAKE ANOTHER STEP by Mark Edwin Carlson. What forms might healing take?

2023-06-08T01:33:03-04:00Articles, News, Art|

What forms might healing take? I became aware of the Combat Paper Project and the Warrior Writers about a year ago. Through a contact at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. The email said they thought these artists were right up my alley. Subsequently, I showed a Combat Paper Portfolio, made of handmade paper from pulped uniforms. A catharsis for the group of vets who created it, a catharsis for the vets who viewed it here at Susan Hensel Gallery. Art takes various forms: comforting, recognizable, new, challenging, frightening. Healing does too. The Combat Papermakers and the Warrior Writers offer the opportunity for local vets of any conflict, of anytime, free of charge, to collaborate in a creative re-invention, a re-organization, a re-formatting...a new way of thinking about the personal costs of their service. The Combat Paper Project in Residence at MCBA September 21–28, 2009 MCBA and Susan Hensel Gallery are proud to host The Combat Paper Project. For a week-long residency in MCBA’s studios. Through paper making workshops, local veterans are given the chance to use uniforms worn in combat to create cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beaten into fiber and formed into sheets [...]

Pentimento is ready and waiting!

Pentimento is ready and waiting! What Is Pentimento Pentimento. Pentimenti may show that a composition originally had an element. For example, a head or a hand, in a slightly different place, or that an element no longer in the final painting was originally planned. The changes may have been done in the under drawing of the painting, or by the visible layers of paint differing from the under drawing, or by the first painted treatment of the element having been over-painted. Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects, meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. Wonderful Stuff!

Wonderful Stuff! COMMUNION opened Saturday, April 18, with a shared meal and a wonderful discussion about art and fashion. Among Jon Coffelt, Carolyn G. Halliday, Kathleen Richert and Betsy Dollar. Issues of identity and the stories we tell with our clothes were discussed. I love the shadows cast by the little clothes! Jon told the individual stories of many of the hand stitched clothes. Like the story of Marlee; the story of the prom dress; A story of Ruth Bernhard's memorial to Stonewall; story of Matushka's mastectomy dress designed by Versace. The soldier PJ's that memorialized the "last camping trip." And so many more. Claire Jeanine Satin on Sunday

Getting ready for the next show Getting ready for the next show The opening of Pentinmento went off without a hitch. Beautiful books. Attentive people. Claire spoke here and at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Key to her work as an artist is the influence of John Cage who she met while teaching in Florida. In the choices she makes, she tries to employ Cagean decision making, removing the ego and the intuition as much as possible from the equation. She feels that chance operations and indeterminancy are best expresses for her in the use of transparency, causing all things to be seen, all things to interpenetrate at any moment. This makes for a non-linear expereience of content. Stay tuned. More pictures will follow! Soldier PJ’s

2023-06-08T02:13:00-04:00Articles, Art|

Soldier PJ's Soldier PJ's. These were Jon's pajamas when he was 6 years old. Before the time of Disney and Warner Brothers cartoon characters, boys were limited cowboys, toy soldiers and the occasional deer. Jon loved his soldier pjs dearly. Speaking of deer, his family went on a camping trip and had to take their pjs with them. It rained the whole way there and since they were pulling a boat behind the car everything in the boat became very wet. Once they set up the tent his mom thought is would be a good idea to try to dry out their clothes on the grill. For whatever reason, she chose to dry out Jon's flannel red housecoat with the deer heads first. Almost immediately they caught on fire. Luckily his soldier pajamas weren’t harmed at the time. Incidentally, after this horror and Jon's crying for a solid hour, his family decided to call it quits in the middle of the night and head home. They were tired, sad, broken hearted and very damp. It was their first and last camping trip as a family. Memories, memories. 2006. Don't forget! Reader's Art ends April 15, whether you have [...]

An Early Shirt

2023-06-08T02:12:30-04:00Articles, News, Art|

An Early Shirt An Early Shirt. Reader's Art continues to have visitors. Tara O'Brien's book is especially popular right now, what with all the economic news! My response is, "Who knew fine binding could be made so small?" It even has leather doublures! In other news, I just learned Friday, that Jon Coffelt will be coming out from New York for the opening of Communion, barring family emergencies. Today we begin showing you a few of the miniatures that Jon Coffelt will be bringing here in April.17 Interestingly, Jon Coffelt was able to see the selvage on this particular original and found out that it was made in 1952. He actually made two shirts from this garment. The other has long sleeves for whatever reason. Both are 100% screen-printed cotton. This example has a button-down collar. Plan Ahead!

2023-06-08T02:12:16-04:00Exhibition, Articles, Artists|

Plan Ahead! Plan Ahead! Opening April 18. Stories will be told! Jon Coffelt does far more than make tiny clothing. He tells stories. The title Communion encapsulates the collaborative process between Jon and the person commissioning the piece of clothing, melding clothing with memory. Communion also expresses the sense of the community that is generated by seeing all the pieces displayed at the same time. "Each piece represents a person. Many of those people have passed, and so the piece of clothing is a fragment. The pieces are just fragments of ourselves—people that we may have been at one time or will be at some point."
