Jon Coffelt’s perfect impossible clothes

Jon Coffelt's perfect impossible clothes This is from one of John’s great aunts. It is a pajama top made of a poly cotton rayon blend and would have kept her warm on a winter’s night. Notice the large, rounded collar and how the sleeves are wider and more open as to enable much movement of the wearer. 1999 One of Jon's very first commissions were for Gerda Carmichael, and she was married in this short version of a sari in India. This garment was very worn and frayed and I was so afraid to cut into it at first. This is one of the pieces that he began to realize could affect people is such a myriad of ways. She cried upon seeing it for the first time and she told Jon she pictured her wedding day back in 1935. Her husband passed in the 1980’s. 1994 Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects, meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. An Early Shirt

An Early Shirt An Early Shirt. Reader's Art continues to have visitors. Tara O'Brien's book is especially popular right now, what with all the economic news! My response is, "Who knew fine binding could be made so small?" It even has leather doublures! In other news, I just learned Friday, that Jon Coffelt will be coming out from New York for the opening of Communion, barring family emergencies. Today we begin showing you a few of the miniatures that Jon Coffelt will be bringing here in April.17 Interestingly, Jon Coffelt was able to see the selvage on this particular original and found out that it was made in 1952. He actually made two shirts from this garment. The other has long sleeves for whatever reason. Both are 100% screen-printed cotton. This example has a button-down collar. Reader's Art gets reviewed Many thanks to Susannah Schouweiler for a good review on MinnPost.com. http://www.minnpost.com/artsarena/2009/03/11/7292/readers%E2%80%99_art_show_ It is cold today in a way that only Minneapolis can be in March! The front windows are frosted up to the very top. We began yesterday with rain and very wet snow. By this morning, it was below zero again and all that humidity froze on the windows. When the sun hits the windows this afternoon. We may be able to see the artwork in the windows again! Meanwhile, Zach sent over his picture of the early moments of the opening. And also a couple very nice shots of the show. Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects. Meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. Leap of Faith opens Friday

2023-06-08T01:42:34-04:00Exhibition, Articles, Art|

Leap of Faith opens Friday The floor is still dirty, flotsam and jetsum abound and the lights need adjusting. But, the show is hung in the Susan Hensel Gallery. And it is almost ready at ArtSpace as well, thanks to Sue Goodspeed and Dale Kennedy. Today I have a few rough pictures of the SHD space. I do like to show you the installations in process, from chaos to completion. But I was too tired and spacey after staying up watching the election results to photograph the fulll effect! This portion of the show looks very pre-election: it is rather somber in tone. But the windows! Oh you must drive by at night! Local artist Debora Miller installed a brillant, glowing, colorful site specific installation called Collection. It lights the night! Tomorrow, I will try to photograph the ArtSpace portion of the show. Ta,ta! In the neighborhood

In the neighborhood (Dan Bisgaard, Kanti Jocelyn-Bisgaard, Peter Wilson, Sul and David) Do you know these people? They are making a difference. South Minneapolis continues to develop as an exciting place for art. Artists James Michael Lawrence ( who will have a show at the gallery in January) and Peter Wilson sent me these photos of murals just down the street from me at Laurra Auto Service, the corner of 18th and Cedar. I had the opportunity to meet the artists, Sul and David, the other day. What a delightful meeting! These two men are devoted to using the arts to improve the neighborhood. KUDOS! The murals are painted by Sul, the words evidently provided by David. Reader’s Art 8 selection begins

2023-06-08T02:04:04-04:00Articles, Artists, Art|

Reader's Art 8 selection begins Reader's Art 8: handmade with care. Nearly 200 images have arrived in my mailbox this year. Beautiful books of all sorts from all over the country. The postcard has been ordered and preliminary sorting has begun. It will be a hard decision this year because all the work is topnotch. The primary decision to be made right now is How large will the emphasis on handmade paper be? I always jury the show as a single entity. That means that I look at how the work goes together and how it will flow in the space. Will the show, in total, make sense? While this has always been a survey show, the pieces are chosen for their place in the gestalt as well as for their intrinsic quality. It is an interesting process. I put out the call for art with a vague idea in mind...with some expectations of how a show might look. But all shows, and this one in particular, seem to tell me what is going on out there. The entries dictate the show by demonstrating what artists are concerned about right now. There is one more day to receive [...]

Gazing at Stars

2023-06-08T02:04:21-04:00Articles|

Gazing at Stars It's a bit hard to gaze at stars tonight. The clouds have moved in bringing warmer temperatures with them: sweatshirt weather in the middle of the day. Neighbors and a class of teens came in from Minnesota Center for Books Arts to see the show today. Karen's tour de force was, as always, apparent. Standing among the stars on a gray day is an uplifting experience. Even as I write this, TalkingImageConnection, a group of writers, is busily at work, writing original prose and poetry in response to Karen's installation. Her installation is "site-specific" meaning it was conceived of and designed for this space. So too is their work. Most of the poets were able to come in for the opening, soak up the experience and talk with Karen. On Saturday, February 23, 7 pm, Jean Larsen, Ace Moore, Alison Morse, Jeff Skemp and Charlotte Sullivan will reveal their "site specific" writing in a lively reading.
