An Early Shirt

An Early Shirt An Early Shirt. Reader's Art continues to have visitors. Tara O'Brien's book is especially popular right now, what with all the economic news! My response is, "Who knew fine binding could be made so small?" It even has leather doublures! In other news, I just learned Friday, that Jon Coffelt will be coming out from New York for the opening of Communion, barring family emergencies. Today we begin showing you a few of the miniatures that Jon Coffelt will be bringing here in April.17 Interestingly, Jon Coffelt was able to see the selvage on this particular original and found out that it was made in 1952. He actually made two shirts from this garment. The other has long sleeves for whatever reason. Both are 100% screen-printed cotton. This example has a button-down collar. Plan Ahead!

Plan Ahead! Plan Ahead! Opening April 18. Stories will be told! Jon Coffelt does far more than make tiny clothing. He tells stories. The title Communion encapsulates the collaborative process between Jon and the person commissioning the piece of clothing, melding clothing with memory. Communion also expresses the sense of the community that is generated by seeing all the pieces displayed at the same time. "Each piece represents a person. Many of those people have passed, and so the piece of clothing is a fragment. The pieces are just fragments of ourselves—people that we may have been at one time or will be at some point." Reader’s Art gets reviewed

Reader's Art gets reviewed Many thanks to Susannah Schouweiler for a good review on MinnPost.com. http://www.minnpost.com/artsarena/2009/03/11/7292/readers%E2%80%99_art_show_ It is cold today in a way that only Minneapolis can be in March! The front windows are frosted up to the very top. We began yesterday with rain and very wet snow. By this morning, it was below zero again and all that humidity froze on the windows. When the sun hits the windows this afternoon. We may be able to see the artwork in the windows again! Meanwhile, Zach sent over his picture of the early moments of the opening. And also a couple very nice shots of the show. Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects. Meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. Reader’s Art 9 opened with Reading

2023-06-08T02:03:57-04:00Exhibition, Articles, Artists, Art|

Reader's Art 9 opened with Reading The white gloves were donned and the intense readers arrived. I've had such a quiet opening. As in so little talking! They were reading deeply. There will surely be more pictures on Monday when Zach downloads his camera. Zach, my Monday salvation. Does a better job of photographing the openings than I. These were the only photos I remembered to shoot. I get so caught up with the clients that I forget about my camera. I'll be interested to see what he caught on "film." He had to run out and manage an opening as a favor for ArtSpace at Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church. Just Looking in action

Just Looking in action I have not received all the photos yet. But you can begin to see the installation in action here. Friday was a delightfully cool night for an opening. A gentle crowd arrived and stayed and played with the interactive video. Mary, in the middle, learned that she could line her own eyes up with various pairs of glasses. Watch the website. I hope to have more visuals and have the audio compressed and on line sometime next week. Pictured with the EYES is the videographer, John Hensel, my son. Who came in and worked all week developing programs to film, duplicate and project attendees. The EYES project is one he showed at Oberlin College several years ago. Seemed perfect for the topic at hand. Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects, meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. Coming soon! Revisions of the American Dream! This new show is a special event! The curator, Zach Pearl, began working at Susan Hensel Gallery last year as an intern. He now works here as my gallery assistant. Keeping me sane and taking over more of the administration weekly. This show is HIS baby! A Slight Pause... The gallery will be on PAUSE until February 14. I will be away from the building, making art. If you are desperate, please email me. I may be able to arrange for a friend to let you in to see Karen Hanmer's show. The participants have been chosen for Reader's Art 8. I will post the names here at a later time. Meanwhile, stay warm! Reader’s Art 8 selection begins

2023-06-08T02:04:04-04:00Articles, Artists, Art|

Reader's Art 8 selection begins Reader's Art 8: handmade with care. Nearly 200 images have arrived in my mailbox this year. Beautiful books of all sorts from all over the country. The postcard has been ordered and preliminary sorting has begun. It will be a hard decision this year because all the work is topnotch. The primary decision to be made right now is How large will the emphasis on handmade paper be? I always jury the show as a single entity. That means that I look at how the work goes together and how it will flow in the space. Will the show, in total, make sense? While this has always been a survey show, the pieces are chosen for their place in the gestalt as well as for their intrinsic quality. It is an interesting process. I put out the call for art with a vague idea in mind...with some expectations of how a show might look. But all shows, and this one in particular, seem to tell me what is going on out there. The entries dictate the show by demonstrating what artists are concerned about right now. There is one more day to receive [...]

Gazing at Stars

2023-06-08T02:04:21-04:00Articles|

Gazing at Stars It's a bit hard to gaze at stars tonight. The clouds have moved in bringing warmer temperatures with them: sweatshirt weather in the middle of the day. Neighbors and a class of teens came in from Minnesota Center for Books Arts to see the show today. Karen's tour de force was, as always, apparent. Standing among the stars on a gray day is an uplifting experience. Even as I write this, TalkingImageConnection, a group of writers, is busily at work, writing original prose and poetry in response to Karen's installation. Her installation is "site-specific" meaning it was conceived of and designed for this space. So too is their work. Most of the poets were able to come in for the opening, soak up the experience and talk with Karen. On Saturday, February 23, 7 pm, Jean Larsen, Ace Moore, Alison Morse, Jeff Skemp and Charlotte Sullivan will reveal their "site specific" writing in a lively reading.
