Reader's Art & Debora Miller Minneapolis artist Debora Miller is working on a window installation, murmur, for Reader's Art 10. Last night, the windows glowed with the first images. There will be more. Even tonight there are some tree shapes projecting from behind. About Susan Hensel Gallery Opened September 10th, 2004 Susan Hensel Gallery was a gallery/ workspace presenting 5-6 shows per year devoted to the concept of narrative in the arts in an intimate space, with hardwood floors and high tin ceilings. The Susan Hensel Gallery is now both a window gallery on Cedar Avenue, the main thoroughfare in south Minneapolis and an online venture represented on Artsy.net. In March 2013, the interior space reverted to a working studio for Susan Hensel where she continues to work on small and large scale artwork with an attitude. Graffiti prevention stencil

Graffiti prevention stencil Graffiti prevention stencil. While musicians played at Cupa Joe's, Zach, Eric & I began the demonstration stencil process. We taped the stencil edges up with duct tape. Zach rolled little loops of tape and placed them behind the floppier edges. Surprisingly, the wind made the styrene flap around a bit. We masked the area around the stencil with paper. Nothing fancy, newspaper would work. Zach and I sprayed several colors through the stencil. It was important to hold the sprayer away about 8 inches or so, to reduce over spray on the really rough stucco. When the stencil was removed, the design was pretty clear. I did not expect sharp edges. We flipped the stencil over and did another round of colors. The bottom of the stencil was too hard an edge for my taste. So, Zach and I taped off an area and filled it in with the remaining green and purple paint. Zachary Pearl was the artist who designed this first stencil for Corcoran Neighborhood. He gracefully agreed to help do this one. It was pretty easy. We spent maybe 2 or 2 1/2 hours including clean-up. It is helpful to have a [...]

How to Build an Igloo?

How to Build an Igloo? How to Build an Igloo? Summer is finally here. Warm but not too hot...and we are thinking about igloos! Local artist Andrea Miller will be wrestling with coal and ice and sod in my gallery as she wrestles with the issues of global warming and her own carbon footprint. The show starts Saturday, September 5, more or less at 2pm. With a performance by Andrea using these materials. You are invited to observe anytime between 2 and 5 pm. We really do not know how long the performance will take...how long does it take an ice shelf to melt? After the performance is complete, Andrea will clean up and re-organize the remains into a multimedia installation that will open to the public. With the usual fanfare of good food and drink, on Friday, September 18, 7-9pm. Just Looking People who have been in the studio are mesmerized. They spend time looking and looking and looking. When they return for the opening on August 8th, I think they will be surprised by the transformation. My son, John Hensel, arrives tomorrow and we will work together on a computer program that will transform the experience. I don't want to show you too much and spoil the experience! So, the photo is intentionally enigmatic. Susan Hensel Gallery The focus of Susan Hensel Gallery is on compelling objects. Meaningful use of materials, and engaging sculpture. Celestial Navigation..the final programs

Celestial Navigation..the final programs Talking Image Connection wrote their hearts out and read the evening of February 23 to a packed house. Most of the time the gallery space does not seem "too small." This was one of the other times... The reading was strong, exciting, at times uproarious, and just plain wonderful. The chapbook sold out immediately. The final event, before pack-up, was a breakfast hosted by Karen Hanmer for friends of the gallery and fans of her work. The fine fruits, pastries and excellent coffee were catered by the Firefly Bistro2, right next door to the gallery. We were especially pleased to feed the teenagers of the Minnesota Center for Book Arts In Design program. Do watch this space. Reader's Art 8 is coming soon! I Will get the Hang of This!

I Will get the Hang of This! So, I started this yesterday. I do not promise daily missives...I don't manage daily anything! But I will try to keep readers up to date on the happenings at the gallery . Tonight, and every 4th Wednesday, 7pm, Artists Unite meet here. This is a still nascent, amoeba like artists salon for local artists, primarily from South Minneapolis. On any given week we could talk about art history, new tools, new shows, show our artwork, read our poems...It is still very loose. It, prehaps, needs tightening up. While we drink wine tonight, I will suggest that we talk about the phenomenon of the Frida Kahlo show that just closed at the Walker Art Center. A Language Beyond Words

A Language Beyond Words In the House of the Mineral Spirits The performance is past, but the show continues. There are multiple videos to be seen. On opening night, in conversation, an onlooker and I agreed that there is "something there" that we could not quite describe in Dean Ebben's videos. There is vulnerability, at times innocence and almost always mystery. We agreed that his work is full of a language beyond words. Pictured above is a still from the video If I Could Roll It Out Of Me. This is the video that convinced me to invite Dean to create a show. The show continues to the end of February. Susan Hensel Gallery hours: Monday 10-5 and by very generous appointment.
