COVID-19 And Art, Time-No-Time

COVID-19 And Art, Time-No-Time My friends and I named the epidemic the “TIME-NO-TIME”. But, the interaction of COVID-19 and art, the epidemic cancelled my exhibition schedule in one fell swoop. After 50 years of making and exhibiting artwork at almost all times…the work had nowhere to go. Of course, the first response was panic. In order to assert a little control over the TIME-NO-TIME, I decided to study and learn more about the trends in the global art market. I enrolled in an intensive class on artwork economics with Christie’s Auction House, studying under Dr. Clare McAndrew, a world-renowned analyst of global art business. I had been observing the changes happening re: online sales. All indications were that this segment would grow during the pandemic, reduce somewhat as it died down, but remain at 15-25% of sales going forward.     Moving Online: COVID-19 And Art Subsequently, several things intersected. I had hired Faceless Marketing, a full-service marketing agency prior to COVID-19, to re-brand me, polish up my personal website as well as my gallery website, and create a real presence on the internet. I was looking for more ways to exhibit even though galleries and museums were shut down. The first thing [...]

2022-04-19T19:19:12-04:00Exhibition, Articles|

Martha Bird: Sales Are a Good Thing Martha Bird’s sold piece, Then to Now, just shipped to the art consultant today. SCORE! You never know exactly where sales will come from.  Martha’s show with Susan Hensel Gallery, Body Work, ended in mid January. No sales during the show period. But four months later… But one of the beauties of online exhibitions is that the work can remain available after the exhibition if you have made that agreement with your gallery.  That was the case for Martha Bird. As a gallerist and artist, I want to give my represented artists the maximum flexibility possible because, from my experience it can take a long time for buyers to pull-the-trigger on a purchase…like YEARS!   […]

2022-10-12T14:44:24-04:00Exhibition, Articles, News|

Ingrid Restemayer returns to Susan Hensel Gallery  for the second time with a new fiber art series titled Talk to Me. These pieces continue the strong compositions and driving aesthetic focus of the artist’s oeuvre, developing the threads she has woven so far while introducing a new set of idioms. Using handmade paper, printmaking and embroidery, Restemayer gives us a quiet, contemplative view of the ways humanity communicates with itself. The works combine colored paper as a background to etchings of animals, with embroidery that stitches the work together and adds textural elements on its own. […]

Navigating New Waters: Kate Vinson in 2021 |Susan Hensel Gallery

NAVIGATING NEW WATERS Now Open in Susan Hensel Gallery by KATE VINSON “Navigating New Waters” by Textile Artist Kate Vinson in the windows at Susan Hensel Gallery. I have known Kate Vinson for a number of years now. I first met her when she received the Jerome Foundation Project Grant for Textile Art  in roughly 2015.  There was  a reception for past and present Jerome artists led by the new director of the Textile Center of Minnesota. I met some truly wonderful artists there, who remain important to me today!  Kate is among them. Kate is a restless creative, working across natural media, focusing on using the body and natural materials. She talks about making art as being a “full body” kinesthetic experience. Additionally, I’ve know her as an artist with a true love of materials; an outdoor adventure educator and guide; as a high school art teacher, now at Perpich Arts High School. In whatever she does, nature plays an important role.  Her exhibition, Navigating New Waters | Susan Hensel Gallery, is also continuing evidence of that passion. […] No Fields Found.

A Long post about Vacations and Bathrooms

2023-06-08T00:44:55-04:00Articles|

A Long post about Vacations and Bathrooms I just returned from 2 glorious, restorative weeks on the shores of Lake Superior.  A beautiful surprise  appeared shortly before I packed up to come back to Minneapolis, were 2 beach artworks by Dale Kennedy. I arrived to a torn -up house.  The Gallery looks like a hazmat site!  Do you remember the scene in the movie ET when they wrapped the house and entered in hazmat suits to try to capture ET?  That's what the gallery/studio looks like! "Why?" you may ask. Well, the renovation continues.  I am installing a full bathroom on the first floor. It takes away some of  the exhibition space, but will be worth it in the end. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the house, more bathroom action. As you probably know, I live above the gallery. The bathroom upstairs was falling apart...in fact it is a wonder the toilet did not fall through the floor. But when I got home a few days ago, everything was stripped out of that bathroom and the fixtures were back ordered! My personal bathroom as it looks today. So, in the middle of the night, and all day too, I have [...]
